Rotterdam
Rotterdam is an interesting city with a rich history. There are lots of things to experience and activities to do on the water and around. So you won't be bored during your stay in Rotterdam if you're done competing in one of the sports events.
Lively atmosphereFor centuries, Rotterdam has had a connection with water. Because of the city's orientation along the River Maas, Rotterdam has a lot of inner harbours, a lively atmosphere with lots of water-related excitement. Besides all of this, Rotterdam is of course also known for its international port. The same port in which the Holland-America Line (HAL) was seated in the second half of the 19th century, with its headquarters at the 'Wilhelminakade'. From this site lots of immigrants left for America with many hopes and excitements. This building is now a famous hotel (Hotel 'New York'). Hotel New York still has many features which are reminiscent of this period. Every space in the building has a history.
Grand Old Lady
Curious for a real steam ship experience? Be sure to visit the SS Rotterdam. This 'Grand Old Lady', as it is sometimes called, is back in Rotterdam after an absence of many years. During the day you can look around on this magnificent ship, and at night it is possible to stay in one of the comfortable cabins.
Trade
Along with the international port there is also a great history of trading in Rotterdam. In the so-called 'Entrepothaven' there are a lot of features reminiscent of these 'trading times'. Examples include the former customs building in which the Suitehotel Pincoffs is situated since 2007. It's name refers to mister Lodewijk Pincoffs, one of the founders of the Holland-America Line and the 'Rotterdamsche Bank'. This low key hotel is one of the gems along the river Maas. From here there is a spectacular view of the Erasmus bridge and the skyline of Rotterdam.
Seaman house ('Zeemanshuis')
Also in other parts of the city you can experience the 'port vibe'. The Maritime Hotel (originally a seaman house), the Tulip Inn and Inntel Hotels Rotterdam Centre with their 'naval interior' are also fine examples of the Rotterdam 'port vibe'. From the rooms in one of these hotels you can enjoy the view over the river Maas and see the ships passing by.
