Sister Sledge
Ahoy Saturday 23 July
While the music world has a litany of successful ‘performing families’, there are few who have transcended the genre – and were more than just a gimmick. Simply put, being able to create an amazing group, regardless of family ties. Four talented women – indeed, and coincidentally also sisters – are undoubtedly able to add to this elite group of artists. Mother Florez was also a successful performer, having a great influence on the career of the Sledge sisters. After she discovered the singing talent of her daughters, she had them perform frequently on political and philanthropic events and fairs. Since 1979, after the release of the hit album ‘We Are Family’, this remarkable group developed into a versatile world-class formation, which managed to win many hundreds (!) of awards, including Billboard’s Artist of the Year. The number ‘We Are Family’ won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
Sister Sledge became one of the most successful female groups in the world. In the 80s and 90s, the world witnessed the maturing of Sister Sledge hits with ‘Lost in Music’, ‘Got to Love Somebody’, ‘Reach Your Peak’ and the legendary song ‘Frankie’, which was awarded gold internationally. In the years that followed, they sold millions of records worldwide. The enchanting blend of four major vocal sounds, the continuous process of development, the art of musical perfection and an audience loyalty, is the recipe for continued success.
In short: ‘Sister Sledge has the stuff legends are made off’
